"The skippers and their teams are seasoned mariners, and both vessels are outfitted with proper safety systems and signalling equipment," an official involved in the effort stated.

The nine individuals on board are from the United States, Cuba, France, and Poland. Mexico said it has opened communications with rescue coordination centers from those nations along with their embassy officials.

"The group is co-operating fully with the authorities and continue to be hopeful in the ability of the crews to safely arrive in Havana," the spokesperson added.

Recent Humanitarian Mission

Just days before, the Cuban authorities publicly celebrated and officially received a different ship that had transported a significant amount of humanitarian aid to the country.

That ship, called "a new Granma" in reference to the vessel in which Castro came back to Cuba to start the armed struggle in the 1950s, carried solar panels, drugs, formula milk, bicycles and food.
