The Showrunner Shares He Has a Plan for How His Sci-Fi Series Will End... At the Moment.

Vince Gilligan never anticipated that the Apple TV+ show would emerge as a breakout success. “I am so grateful to the audience,” Gilligan says. “I did not foresee the show being as widely discussed as it is, and it makes me thrilled beyond words.”

Now that Season 1 of the acclaimed program wrapping up—and Season 2 greenlit and underway—the writers' room opened up about the fan response and whether it will impact the storyline of Pluribus.

About the Incredible Viewer Reception

Anyone might to get swayed by the widespread acclaim and audience predictions surrounding Pluribus. Gilligan, however, is striving to steer clear of all that.

“The experience is akin to an endless supply of hot fudge sundaes and being laughing uncontrollably,” he explains. “It's wonderful, but I hear about it anecdotally, and that's on purpose. Never in my life looked myself up on the internet, nor do I ever want to. Not because I don't care. It's a deep trap I know I would disappear down and then I'd be pooping in a five gallon bucket from the hardware store and I'd rarely emerge from my living room.”

Despite trying to stay away, there’s it's impossible to ignore the overwhelmingly positive response to the series. The most practical strategy is to accept it graciously and try not to let it influence the direction of the show.

“It is not our goal to tailor anything,” says writer and executive producer Alison Tatlock. “The narrative we craft is not influenced by what people are saying.”

“It's wiser to keep our heads down and working,” Gilligan adds.

A Pressing Query: Has the creator Know the Finale of Pluribus?

So if the writers are not listening by public opinion, can we assume they already know how Pluribus will reach its endpoint? In short yes… in a way.

“We've developed some compelling concepts about where the show might end up,” Gilligan says. “yet we stand ready to abandon a solid concept for a better idea. That has held us in good stead on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We change course when we get a better idea and I expect we'll continue doing that.”

Then again, if plans fall through, director and writer Gordon Smith has a pretty funny idea to serve as a last resort.

“I constantly suggest that the entire story is inside a snow globe, and that we'll pull back at the end and we're in there,” he says humorously, “but nobody's taking me up on that.”

Then again, one could always use the legendary finales?

“I'd love for Carol to open her eyes next to Bob Newhart,” Gilligan adds, smiling.

Pluribus is currently available on the streaming service.
