Thiago Pitarch has played seven matches for the Spanish giants, featuring five starts.

When an teenage makes Real Madrid history in a crucial Champions League tie against Manchester City, it inevitably draws praise and the spotlight.

During his first start in the competition - and fifth game for the club - the young midfielder made a strong impression as the 15-time European champions secured a 3-0 round of 16 first-leg advantage at the Bernabeu.

The teenager, who also made his Real debut in the qualifying round a month ago with a substitute appearance at Sporting Lisbon, then assisted the Madrid side overcome the English champions in Tuesday's second leg to secure a quarter-final berth.

Aged 18 years old, the midfielder became the club's youngest player to begin two matches in the Champions League knockout stages, beating Brazil forward Vinicius Jr's record by a week and a half.

Rapid Ascent Through La Fabrica

The midfielder is the latest to emerge from the club's academy and is quickly establishing himself as one of the manager's most promising young players.

He signed for Real from Leganes in the summer of 2023, having formerly spent time at Atletico and Getafe's youth teams, and starting out for the under-19 side, where he rapidly created a positive impact.

Pitarch progressed to the B team and it was in a friendly match in which they played against the academy's first team, then coached by the former defender, where the youngster is said to have caught the attention of the present manager, who replaced Xabi Alonso in the new year.

Reports would later describe the moment as "love at first sight," adding he excelled not only for his technical ability, but for the vitality, personality and drive he brought to the side.

'His Greatest Quality Remains His Personality'

In the pre-season of 2025, ex-manager Alonso invited Pitarch to train with the first team and gave him minutes during the warm-up matches.

Yet, it was Arbeloa's appointment that became the defining moment in his development as he was introduced as a late substitute in both ties against the Portuguese side that led to the meeting with Manchester City.

"I've dreamed of this each night before going to bed, the very first time I started playing the game, every day you go to train and each day you play a match," stated the player after his first appearance.

"I've just achieved my ambition with the best team in the world and in the top tournament."

Handed a starting debut in La Liga against his former club - where he was for several seasons after moving from Atletico in 2018 - he has kept his spot for the next four as injuries to Jude Bellingham and Ceballos created an opening.

The teenager has seized it with displays that have belied his age and experience.

"He is a extremely fast footballer, and you can observe what he's capable of," said Arbeloa. "He's extremely dynamic, with excellent stamina, work-rate and movement."

The player's mindset has also stood out to his manager.

"His greatest quality is his personality," continued Arbeloa. "He always wants the possession, and even under pressure, he remains unfazed.

"I understand people are astonished to see him start in a Champions League match, but he's playing because I had total trust in him to do his normal game.

"Thiago will continue to get opportunities with the main squad. It's a pleasure to coach a talent like him."

A Future International Decision

Pitarch was born in Fuenlabrada, in the Spanish capital's community, and was raised deeply involved in Spanish football, progressing through youth setups before joining Real Madrid's famous La Fabrica system.

He possesses dual Spanish and Moroccan nationality, giving him the option to play for both nations at the highest level.

According to Fifa eligibility rules, players may represent multiple nations at junior level without being locked in, with the ultimate choice only final once they appear in a competitive full international.

He has played for Spain at youth level, representing both the under-19 and under-20 sides, and took part in the 2025 Youth World Cup, where La Roja made it to the quarter-finals.

Despite this, he has yet to commit to either senior national team, who are watching his rise with keen attention.

Speaking recently, the player said: "I have not taken my final decision yet. My situation is great with the Spanish federation, but I will reach a conclusion in the near future."

His situation echoes that of other bi-national players such as club colleague Brahim Diaz and Barcelona forward Lamine Yamal. Whereas teenage Yamal opted for Spain, Diaz opted to play for Morocco.

Focus on the Future

For now, Pitarch's focus is on establishing himself in the Real side and rewarding Arbeloa's faith.

He featured for 74 minutes in the 2-1 win at the Etihad, which sealed a five-one aggregate success and a quarter-final matchup with Bayern Munich.

His substitution by another academy player in Manuel Angel to emphasise the coach's confidence in younger players to aid the team pursue future success.

Following his impressive impact so far on the Champions League, the midfielder is tipped to be a central figure in that.

"The manager treats me the identical way. We handle it very normally. I try not to think about it too much - I have to earn my playing time on the pitch," he commented following the win at Manchester.
