The people of Israel mark second remembrance of 7 October attacks as Palestinian ceasefire negotiations proceed
Israelis have assembled around the country to remember 24 months since the Hamas-initiated offensive on 7 October 2023, as talks proceeded in Egypt over a resolution to the war in Gaza.
The incident led to more than 1,200 people losing their lives and 251 others abducted away to Gaza as captives. It was the uniquely most lethal day for the Jewish community since the Holocaust.
Israel responded by beginning a armed campaign in Gaza which has killed more than 67,000 people, according to the region's Hamas-run health ministry. Its figures are regarded as reliable by the UN and other global organizations.
"The aggressive adversaries have hit us hard, but they have not broken us," Benjamin Netanyahu added on Tuesday.
He also vowed to "achieve all the objectives of the war: the return of all the kidnapped, the elimination of the Hamas regime and the assurance that Gaza will not create a danger to Israel".
Commemorative Ceremonies Across Israel
The Israeli government rescheduled official memorials until October 16th - after the completion of the festive season - but gatherings still took place throughout the country on Tuesday.
A memorial ceremony for the relatives of Israelis who died in the Hamas assault was organized in the coastal city. Arranged by the affected families, it was aired on Israeli television channels.
Some time earlier, a moment of silence was respected across the country.
Ceasefire Meetings in Egypt
Meanwhile, Israeli and Hamas delegations met in the North African coastal city of Sharm el-Sheikh for a continuing round of mediated discussions to discuss the terms of the agreement.
A prominent Palestinian official involved in the negotiations said that an night meeting of mediated discussions commenced at evening in Egypt.
The representative explained the morning session finished without significant progress, amid differences over the recommended Israeli pullout plans from Gaza and over safeguards Hamas wants to guarantee Israel does not recommence combat after the first phase of the deal.
He commented that the discussions are "difficult and have still not deliver any major advancement," but noted that facilitators are working hard to close the gaps between the conflicting groups.
Critical Matters in Talks
- A lasting truce
- The trade of the captives still detained by Hamas for inmates from Gaza
- The withdrawal of military personnel from Gaza
- Measures for assistance provision
- Future governance of the region
Citizen Feeling
In Tel Aviv's public square that day, young a woman - whose brother survived the attack on the outdoor event, where 378 people were murdered and many more were abducted by Hamas fighters - explained: "No place feels like home any longer and until each abducted person are released not a single person will have peace of mind."
"After we see everybody home again, we can feel relief once more. Then we can commence recover," she concluded.
Outside Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's official dwelling in the capital, people congregated to express their support for the relatives of the abducted. Israel reports forty-eight continue in detention in Gaza, approximately twenty of whom are thought to be alive.
Demonstrator one woman explained: "We must do whatever arrangement required for the hostages to come back home. But we really want assurances that we will be protected."
Surveys now regularly indicate that about 70% of Israeli citizens desire the hostilities to end in as payment for the release of the captives.
Gaza Circumstances
At the site of the music event, mourners came together to remember the victims.
From there, the noise of Israeli air strikes and explosions could be noticed just a few kilometres away in Gaza, where local people reported the intense Israeli shelling persisted.
In Gaza City, attacks were documented in the dawn of that day in the western district, Rimal and locality neighbourhoods and in the eastern area of Sheikh Radwan, as well Shati refugee camp to the north-west.
"As the night comes, the dread appears with it," relocated urban resident a mother, whose young son was lost his life by an Israeli air strike earlier, described.
"We are terrified of the air strikes. All the night we are sleeping together, embracing, especially my little child who rests his face on me the entire evening."
"Continuously we monitor the news to see what happened. And I'm worried that this truce will not be finalized and that the conflict will come back to us."
Health Situation
Al-Shifa hospital in Gaza City reported it had accepted the corpses of half dozen people by the afternoon, including several killed in an Israeli strike in the southern area.
Another medical facility in the south region of that area said additional fatalities had been brought there. A person was lost his life by Israeli forces while seeking help to the south, health workers reported.
