The ice cream brand's Co-Founder Alleges Parent Company Halted Pro-Palestinian Frozen Dessert Product
The co-founders behind the well-known ice cream brand Ben and Jerry's has stated that corporate owner the multinational conglomerate stopped the launch for an innovative Palestine-themed frozen dessert product.
The entrepreneur, who established the company with Jerry Greenfield, announced how he will personally create the controversial product as part of an individual collection showcasing issues the company was prevented from addressing publicly.
Ongoing Dispute Involving Founders versus Corporate Owner
The recent development intensifies the continuing disagreement among the internationally recognized dessert company with its corporate parent, the UK-based consumer goods giant which has owned the ice cream brand since 2000.
The co-founders have asserted that Unilever along with their ice cream division Magnum improperly prevented Ben & Jerry's from "fulfilling its ethical commitments".
Watermelon Flavor becoming an Emblem for Support
Mr. Cohen revealed through an Instagram video how he is creating an innovative watermelon-based frozen dessert, asking for consumer ideas for naming options plus potential ingredients.
“I'm accomplishing what they were prevented from doing,” the founder declared from his kitchen. “I'm making a watermelon-based frozen dessert that calls for lasting ceasefire in Palestine while demanding addressing the harm that was done there.”
This particular fruit has become an emblem for solidarity with Palestinians because of its colors, that match the colors in the Palestinian flag – the distinctive four-color pattern.
Historical Social Engagement plus Current Developments
Several years ago, the ice cream company ceased sales of its products in territories occupied by Israel, leading to Unilever transferring their Israel business over to an Israeli distributor, thus allowing ongoing distribution in the occupied West Bank.
The new dessert series will be developed under Ben's Best, the activist dessert company that was first established several years back for endorsing former US presidential candidate Senator Sanders with the flavor "Bernie's Back".
Management Shifts plus Future Intentions
Mr. Cohen revealed that he plans to develop other frozen dessert varieties focusing on concerns that Ben & Jerry's was prevented from addressing publicly by Unilever.
This development comes after co-founder Jerry Greenfield resigned from the company in September, following decades of involvement, mentioning concerns regarding how its independence was compromised after Unilever's decision to curb its social activism.
At that time, Mr. Cohen commented that “My partner has a really big heart and the ongoing dispute with our parent company was breaking it."
"My heart compels me to continue to work inside the company to advocate for corporate autonomy so that it can achieve the social mission, the values which established its foundation and has maintained for over 40 years," he told journalists.
