New York City's Mayor-Elect, Zohran Mamdani, has confirmed to make his home in the historic Gracie Mansion, leaving behind his rent-controlled apartment that was a central issue in his run for office.

A Traditional Abode

Dating back to 1799, Gracie Mansion has served as the official residence for most New York City mayors after the mid-20th century.

But, Mamdani, for whom affordable housing is a core issue, was not quick to announce his residency plans right away after his victory in November.

"The choice came down to our family's safety and the imperative to directing my full attention on enacting the platform on affordability the city's residents elected me on," stated Mamdani on Monday.

A Fond Farewell

He resided in the Queens borough of Astoria, a community renowned for its diverse immigrant communities and culinary diversity.

"To Astoria: my gratitude for showing us what is great about New York City," he expressed.

"While I may no longer live in the neighborhood, the community will continue to reside inside me and my work," he added.

Campaign Controversy

Throughout his race for mayor, Mamdani tied his key pledge – halting rent increases – to his personal living arrangements.

But his opponents, most notably ex-governor Andrew Cuomo, criticised Mamdani for living in the apartment despite the fact that he is from a famous family.

Not All Mayors Stayed

Not every mayor have chosen to live at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the billionaire entrepreneur, preferred to remain in his personal mansion on Manhattan's Upper East Side for his tenure, which ended in 2012.

Rather, Bloomberg argued it could serve as a place for public city functions, and pushed for a major refurbishment of the older mansion.

A Grand New Home

As he settles into Gracie Mansion sometime around his inauguration on 1 January, he will find himself in a setting very different than his modest Astoria digs.

With its butter yellow paint, emerald shutters, and bright white balustrades, Gracie Mansion is a wedding cake of a house with views of the East River.

Inside, the ground floor of the historically styled mansion is furnished in the spirit of the home's early 19th-century origins.

The property, which reportedly has five bedrooms, also includes increased security measures to safeguard the mayor and his family.

Ghostly Tales

Some residents have alleged that Gracie Mansion also has supernatural lodgers.

Chirlane McCray, the wife of former mayor Bill De Blasio, informed the press that doors occasionally opened and closing inexplicably, and the floorboards creaked eerily.

The departing mayor Eric Adams was more certain. "It doesn't matter what anyone says," he insisted in 2022. "There are ghosts in there, man."

The Value of Rent Stabilization

His former home is rent-stabilized, which means the city imposes caps on how much property owners can increase rent each year.

Tenants view rent-stabilized housing as valuable lifelines as the price of rent rises faster than what many can afford.

It was reported Mamdani paid about $2,300 each month for his apartment.

Based on data from real estate analysts Zillow, the median rent for a single-bedroom unit in New York City is $3,500 a month.
