Manchester United Poised to Sign Germany Forward Lea Schüller from the Bavarian Giants
Manchester United are on the verge of sealing the deal for prolific Germany forward Lea Schüller in a permanent move from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.
A Major Acquisition for the WSL Side
Schüller, who has half a year remaining on her contract, is known as a consistent goal-getter for both club and country. Having scored more than 100 goals for Bayern and scored 54 times in 82 appearances for her country. This signing is viewed as a marquee coup for the WSL team.
Her exit from Munich was expected since she appeared to be holding back emotions while applauding the club's fans after a win over Bayer Leverkusen recently.
It was reported in December that the Frauen-Bundesliga was losing one of its top strikers. According to multiple sources, the formalities for the transfer are now finalised.
Reliable Goal Threat to Boost the Forward Line
The experienced striker's signing should represent a major uplift to United’s forward line. She has been remarkably consistent with her finishing in Germany’s top flight.
- Over seven straight seasons, up to and including the last term, she reached at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
- She claimed the top scorer award in the 2021-22 season with 16 goals.
Building Steam at Carrington
The acquisition of Schüller’s signature comes at a time when United appear to be gathering momentum.
Their recent on-pitch successes feature qualifying for the Champions League knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a victory in the Conti Cup quarter-finals.
In the transfer market, the mid-season window has seen additional business:
- The acquisition of Swedish right-back Hanna Lundkvist on a multi-year deal.
- The contract extension for Japan playmaker Hinata Miyazawa, a fan favourite since arriving in 2023.
Regarding the midfielder's new deal, a senior figure commented: “She has become a vital part to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and technical ability enables her and the team to control and dictate play from central areas.”
The new defender, having joined from a side from the American league, said: “You can sense how much they [United] have progressed in the last few years, playing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and now featuring in the Champions League.”
