Jets Coach Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After NYC Shooting

Jets head coach Aaron Glenn has stated that he recently spoke with defensive back Kris Boyd and is confident the player will be OK after being shot in central New York in the early hours of Sunday.

Glenn noted that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “positive” during a recent discussion.

“That’s what eases my mind, is that he’s feeling positive,” Glenn said Wednesday. “His family, they are doing well and he is expected to recover fully.”

Glenn was unsure when Boyd could be discharged the medical facility, where he is reported as in critical but steady condition.

“Not certain at the moment,” he added. “But I will say this, hearing him speak, his attitude was encouraging. Furthermore, that puts my mind at ease, because of his outlook and he expresses himself so positively.”

New York police issued surveillance images Monday of an individual wanted in the shooting of Boyd. The reason behind the incident is still being looked into and authorities said it is unknown if Boyd was the intended victim. No one else was hurt according to reports.

The shooting happened around 2 a.m. on Sunday morning near the famous arena and Times Square. Boyd, in his late twenties, was admitted to a local hospital after being shot in the abdomen, as reported. The shooter fled the scene.

Glenn mentioned Boyd has been in his thoughts “a ton” since the news broke. Glenn added that Boyd and his wife recently welcomed a child.

“The first thing I thought about, he recently became a father,” Glenn remarked. “My mind went to his family, I’m thinking about his kid and I hope he recovers fully. That was my main concern.
“There’s a process to this, I’ll keep private, but It is reassuring that he will recover excellently.”

Boyd did not participate this season, after joining the team, after his season was cut short due to injury on August 18 with a shoulder injury that required surgery.

He signed with New York as a free agent in spring and was projected as a significant contributor of an improved special teams group under the coach and special teams coordinator the special teams coach. However, he got hurt during preseason drills on August 2 and had to be helped off.

Boyd has stayed involved with the squad throughout the season while recovering from the shoulder injury.

“He’s been a part of what we’re doing,” Glenn commented. “I mean, he attends every game. He’s fully engaged. As one of the league’s best on special teams, he has excelled at supporting his teammates.”

Boyd, hailing from the Lone Star State, spent his initial four years with Minnesota after his selection in the later rounds by Minnesota out of UT in the 2019 draft. He signed with Arizona in 2023 and then joined Houston’s practice squad subsequently. Boyd agreed to a one-year deal valued at $1.6 million with New York in March.
