In addition to the GDP decline, Japan is dealing with an growing diplomatic conflict with China regarding Taiwan.

Stocks in Japanese travel and consumer businesses have declined significantly after China advised its nationals to avoid visiting to Japan.

This action by Chinese authorities heightened a diplomatic feud that was initiated by statements from Japan's new prime minister about the possibility of sending forces in the event of a hypothetical Chinese invasion on Taiwan.

The situation triggered a wave of sell-offs across Japan's leisure stocks.

  • Oriental Land shares fell by 5.7%
  • Isetan Mitsukoshi plummeted by 11.3%
  • The national carrier fell by 3.75 percent

"The ongoing dispute over Taiwan and Beijing's advisory discouraging visits to Japan introduces near-term headwinds for retail and hospitality sectors.

"Chinese visitors represent roughly 25 percent of Japan's inbound traffic, making retail outlets, luxury retail, and hospitality especially vulnerable."

GDP Contraction Details

Japanese gross domestic product declined by 0.4% in the third quarter, as industrial exports were impacted by tariffs levied by the US this year.

Overseas shipments were a primary factor of the contraction, dropping by 1.2 percent compared with the previous quarter, and were 4.5% lower than a year ago.

Earlier this year, the American government had proposed Japan with a new 25 percent tariff on its products, which was later reduced to 15 percent when the two countries reached a trade deal.

Private demand also fell, by 0.3 percent compared to the previous quarter.

On an annualized basis, Japan's GDP contracted by 1.8% in the three months through September.

"The Japanese economic situation was solid in the first half of this year and the latest GDP data showed that momentum is halted temporarily.

I anticipate Japan's economy to be returning on a moderate growth trend going forward."

The White House has lately acknowledged the impact of tariffs on Americans, reducing tariffs on food imports including meat, tomatoes, beverages and fruits amid growing concerns about rising costs.
