Detonations and Low-Flying Planes Witnessed in Venezuela's Capital City Caracas City
Witness testimonies surfaced of multiple blasts and the roar of low-flying jets in Caracas in the small hours of Saturday morning. This situation has prompted allegations from the Venezuelan government and requests for international scrutiny.
Venezuela Accuses United States of Aggression
The socialist government has accused the United States of what it calls "imperialist aggression," claiming that former President Donald Trump supposedly authorized strikes against the South American state. In an public statement, the authorities stated that attacks had impacted Caracas and three other provinces: Miranda state, La Guaira, and Aragua state.
"The only objective of these strikes is to seize control of Venezuela's natural resources, notably its petroleum and mineral wealth," the statement declared.
The government urged the global community to condemn the operations, which it termed a "blatant breach of international law" that placed countless of civilians in danger.
Accounts of Explosions and Military Bases Hit
Locals described experiencing roughly several explosions around 2:00 AM in the morning. Residents in various neighborhoods reportedly hurried into the open.
"The earth trembled. This is terrifying. We experienced explosions and planes in the sky," said one local.
Plumes of smoke was seen rising from two military installations in Caracas: the La Carlota airfield and the Fuerte Tiuna base compound, where president Nicolás Maduro is thought to have a residence.
Global Response
The leader of bordering Colombia, wrote on a social platform that "Currently they are striking Venezuela... bombing it with rockets." He requested an swift emergency session of the Security Council.
The Colombian government, which just joined the Security Council, said it would initiate security protocols at its frontier with Venezuela.
Context
These alleged attacks are preceded by a months-long military buildup by the US against the Venezuelan regime. Since August, there has been a substantial American military buildup off the country's northern coast and a number of airstrikes on boats linked to illegal activities.
The government has stated "the implementation of external disturbance" and commanded all defense plans to be implemented. It has also called on its citizens to take to the streets and "repudiate this external attack."
American officials and the Defense Department have not publicly addressed inquiries for comment regarding the events.
