Adult Swim's Leading New Show of This Year Earns a Significant Renewal for Two More Seasons.

Last October, the late-night programming block saw the return of its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, not long after, the network unveiled a completely new animated series with a markedly softer vibe. Haha, You Clowns proved to be gentle and comforting, reminiscent of a animated take of a serene talk show. At a time often marked by dark humor, this show's sincerity found an audience and helped it become a breakout hit.

A Major Commitment

On December 18th, Adult Swim revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for two additional seasons. This gives creator Joe Cappa ample opportunity to develop the story of the Campbell family. The show centers on three well-mannered teenage brothers whose primary trait is their deep love for their single father, with Cappa portraying for all four central characters.

"My deepest thanks go to the audience of the show who welcomed the series and spread the word," remarked Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to continue exploring the Campbell household for a little longer."

Network Praise

Accompanying the news commendation from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "profoundly sincere and oddly captivating." He thanked the fans who embraced the show and advocated for its peculiarly charming sensibility.

"All of you got behind this new show, praised it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Different Kind of Comedy

When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a wholesome alternative" to more cynical adult animated fare. There’s something unexpectedly cozy about watching this charming family go about their simple existence.

Previously, creator Joe Cappa stated his hope to evolve comedy past its prevailing sarcastic tone. He attributed this trend to a broader media landscape.

“We're stuck in a cycle of irony that we keep returning to,” explained Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we must laugh at something different now. The genre needs to change.”

What Comes Next

With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns locked in for the future, Cappa could potentially be part of that change he described. At a minimum, the renewal ensures audiences a little more time to bask in the heartfelt moments of the unique Campbell clan.

The season 1 finale of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. All episodes is available for streaming on HBO Max.
